How Charlotte Water Successfully Transitioned from Geometric Network to ArcGIS Utility Network
Charlotte Water (CLTWater), the largest public water and wastewater utility in the Carolinas, partnered with NV5 in September 2024 to upgrade its GIS infrastructure by transitioning to Esri’s ArcGIS Utility Network.
The move marked a major step toward improved data accuracy, security, and operational efficiency. NV5 guided CLTWater through a detailed process, including data readiness assessments, system design, and staff training.
As a result, CLTWater became the first large municipal utility in the U.S. to fully implement the Utility Network—empowering mobile field users and setting a new standard for GIS modernization.
How the City of Mercer Island, Washington Implemented ArcGIS Utility Network Leveraging a Workshare Approach
In February 2024, the City of Mercer Island, Washington, collaborated with NV5 to implement Esri's ArcGIS Utility Network, enhancing their GIS capabilities. Building on a prior upgrade from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro, this project involved a workshare approach where NV5 and city staff worked closely together. This collaboration ensured a smooth transition, improved data accuracy, and streamlined operations, positioning Mercer Island for future technological advancements.
Boston Water and Sewer Commission Modernizes Operations with NV5
The Boston Water and Sewer Commission (BWSC) teamed up with NV5 to upgrade its systems by migrating from Oracle to SQL Server—a move aimed at boosting performance and future-proofing operations.
NV5 handled the complex transition, including script rewrites, system upgrades to Cityworks and ArcGIS, and development of new tools. Impressively, the switchover was completed in just eight hours with minimal downtime.
Post-migration, BWSC saw immediate improvements in workflows and system integration. With this foundation, they’re now set to explore cloud-based solutions and enhanced compatibility with ArcGIS Pro and the Esri Utility Network.
NV5 Receives 2023 Esri IMGIS Utility Network Implementation Award
In October 2023, NV5 was honored with the Utility Network Implementation Award at Esri's Infrastructure Management and GIS (IMGIS) Conference in Palm Springs, California. This recognition highlights NV5's excellence in implementing Esri's ArcGIS Utility Network for utilities across the United States. NV5's approach involves evaluating existing data and operations, creating customized success plans, and closely collaborating with clients to ensure effective execution and ongoing maintenance.
